Garden – Grow ‐ Give Ministry Project
Growing Food for a Local Food Bank
As a missions group, plant and tend a garden for food that will given to a local
Food Bank. Invite your entire church to participate in this hands-on ministry
project.
In the Fall ~ Contact a local Food Bank to confirm they will accept fresh
vegetables from a local garden.
Secure a site for your missions garden, either on church property, church
member’s property, or community property.
Have the ground plowed so it will be ready for gardening in the spring.
Learn about hunger in America and the world.
Invite a representative from the Virginia Cooperative Extension Service
to speak to your missions group about how to garden and when to plant
certain vegetables.
In late winter (February) ~ Plow the site again to prepare the soil for
planting.
Decide which vegetables will be planted in the garden.
Plan a trip to purchase seeds and plants for the garden.
In March ~ Plant a potato patch, if desired. (Potatoes can inexpensively
feed a family.)
Throughout the spring and summer ~ Plan dates for the missions group to
work together in tending the garden.
Have families volunteer to weekly tend the garden.
Plan dates to harvest and immediately deliver fresh vegetables to the
local Food Bank.
